The 6th grade class at Kobun Elementary School filled us with joy. These beautiful young people prepared a polished presentation and activities to do with us. Everyone had a great time. It was an excellent learning opportunity for the kids and adults, and we were all energized by the interaction.
The kids performed two music pieces, both of which were directed by kids. The first was a stunning choral piece, which the children sang beautifully in tune and with good intonation.
The kids then played Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance on the recorder...perfectly...from memory (not an easy piece to play). Then Steven Galvan had those same young conductors conduct with him while we performed our two pieces. He directed with them at first, then he backed away and let the young conductors finish the piece all by themselves.
Then the kids split us all into small groups with several adults and 6 kids, or so. They had us play games with them. It was the perfect ice breaker and ensured everyone had an intimate experience. Language was not a barrier. Everyone left feeling happy.
